It all started with a simple phone call.

Fabiola had started the day with a feeling of complete hopelessness.

Her 2-year-old son, Brandy, was suffering from intense pain that never went away. Her precious child was on the floor, crying, his knees twisted backwards, a condition known as bilateral congenital knee dislocation.

Brandy was born with the condition and, as he grew, he never learned to walk. He could only move his legs like a duck. Brandy would often cry due to the pain that his condition caused. It was a cruel and sad way to grow up.

As a single mother without regular employment, Fabiola struggled every day to make ends meet. Although she tried to get medical care, she couldn’t afford the expensive treatments it would take to correct his condition.

But, just when she was at her lowest, she received a phone call from her sister in Santo Domingo. Her sister had just heard about a hospital in the city that specialized in conditions like Brandy’s. A hospital that would treat him even if they couldn’t afford it. Filled with renewed hope, she brought her son to the hospital.

Three months later, after reconstructive surgery at the CURE Dominican Republic hospital, Brandy’s legs are bending normally, and he is now undergoing physical therapy. Soon, he will be playing with the other children in his community. The people in Brandy’s community have heard his story, and they consider his healing a miracle.

Now, thanks to a simple phone call, an entire family has been transformed.
