healing changes everything
Congratulations to the CURE Oasis Hospital on 50 years of service to the people of the United Arab Emirates.
Last Saturday, the hospital began its yearlong celebration of this milestone with the raising of a newly-redesigned Oasis hospital flag in a special ceremony on the hospital grounds.
Here are some photos from the event:
Our thanks to Sequim Community Church.
On June 13, the church staged a concert to benefit CURE International and the Christian Veterinary Mission.
The concert, which featured a variety of musical talent from the Sequim, Wash. area., raised more than $1,000 for CURE. It will be used to support our work in Haiti.
Thanks also to Judy Stevenfeldt for the photo and info.
If you have a CURE fundraiser, we’d love to write about it. Please send me an email at the link below.
Hey loyal readers! You may have noticed that in recent weeks we have been making big changes to the CURE Blog and also to the CURE main Web site.
One of the features we added yesterday to the blog is an email subscription form. Now you can receive daily updates when a new post arrives on the CURE Blog. Just use the sign up form to the right (in the sidebar of the blog) and enter your email address.
Also, if you use an RSS feed reader (like Google Reader, the built-in Live Bookmarks RSS reader in Firefox or NewsRack app for iPhone), you can subscribe to our feed with the RSS icon in the Subscribe box.
Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for you to engage with the content we are creating, so if you have any suggestions for us about the blog, we would love to hear them! You can use the feedback link here or the tab at the bottom of the page that says “Feedback.”
All through this month, we are focusing on the work of our Uganda hospital. We asked Derek Johnson, the hospital’s executive director, if he’d like to write something for the blog. He kindly obliged us…
A few days ago, we were hosting a group from The Affero Project. As I spoke about the groundbreaking work accomplished at the hospital, I told the story of a young boy, 14 years of age, named Oscar, who suffers from a brain tumor. Oscar and his father came here a couple of weeks ago without a lot of hope.
As I described this case, I reflected back on some of our success stories for children with brain tumors. In any country in the world, a brain tumor diagnosis brings thoughts of despair and hopelessness. For many of us, a death sentence is the first thing to come to mind. Dr. Mugamba, our hospital’s medical director, and his colleagues are doing groundbreaking and important work in the treatment of hydrocephalus, but it’s no more remarkable than the four dozen tumors they’ll operate on this year.
Here’s a story about Eunice from Uganda.
You can help CURE reach other children like Eunice by going here.
Last month, CURE Kabul celebrated International Day of the Midwife (held every year on May 5). The hospital took part in a two-day conference conducted by the Afghan Midwives Association (AMA). Three midwives from the CURE hospital gave presentations at the conference, sharing their midwifery experiences and their observations on the care of mothers and their families.
The AMA was started in May 2005 and has approximately 1,600 members. It advocates for the midwifery profession and strengthens the role of midwives to ensure the well-being of women and their families in Afghanistan.
CURE International salutes our midwives for their dedication and professionalism.
After six miscarriages, Diljan was finally able to deliver a beautiful baby girl—thanks to expert care at CURE Kabul!
On a cold winter day, a 28-year-old pregnant woman named Diljan and her husband arrived at CURE International Hospital of Kabul in desperate need of medical care. She was suffering from shortness of breath and could barely move. The hospital staff quickly learned that this was not an unusual pregnancy for Diljan.
A big thank you goes out to everyone who took part in our CURE survey a few weeks ago! We value your feedback and appreciate the time you took to provide it. To show our appreciation, all participants were entered into a drawing for a Flip video camera.
We are excited to annouce that Sandi J. of Cypress, TX was selected as the winner! Sandi, thanks so much — we hope you enjoy the camera!
