Patience’s Story
A few months ago, we posted a brief story about then 9-year-old Patience. Here’s more about this inspiring little girl….
Whenever 10-year-old Patience comes to CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda for a checkup, she brings a smile to the faces of the hospital staff.
Around the halls, wards and operating rooms, Patience is known as a “living testimony.” Longtime hospital employees still look at this healthy, happy girl with amazement.
They recall how nearly 10 years ago her terrified parents arrived, carrying a tiny baby with a huge head. They had no idea what was wrong. Thankfully, they had come to the right hospital.
Patience had hydrocephalus, a condition caused by excessive amounts of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Her “big head” was the result of this.
If the CURE hospital hadn’t been there, she would have probably died. If she had survived, she would have suffered from endless physical and mental problems.
Fortunately, Patience received the surgical intervention that saved her life. She was, in fact, one of the first patients to receive surgery for hydrocephalus at the CURE Uganda hospital.
And now she’s part of the growing legacy of children who are alive today because of the specialists at CURE Uganda.
She is also a living example of the hope that the hospital can give to other parents for their own children. Here is how one hospital employee described Patient’s most recent visit to the hospital:
“Her visit put a smile on all our faces. We took her round the hospital for other caretakers to see and be encouraged. [She is] a living testimony. Every caretaker who saw her believed that there is hope for their children, too.”
