Humbled by the Recognition

Leikum Bithanu, a CUREkid from Ethiopia

As many of you know, our CUREkids program has been up and running for over a year now. To date, over $725,000 has been raised, and, as a result and even more impressively, over 1,150 child have been healed through CUREkids.

That in and of itself is amazing recognition of the hard work and effort that many of us pour into this project each and every day. So, I wanted to start off by saying “thank you” from the bottom of our hearts as the CUREkids team. We couldn’t do any of this without God opening doors and providing possibilities beyond our imagination. Of course, God has also brought us our supporters, and we are immensely thankful for each of you that follow, pray for, and give to support the children of CUREkids. CUREkids has been an amazing journey so far and continues to surprise and astound us practically every day! Read the rest of this entry »

100,000 : 1

I’m excited to announce that as of January 23rd, we’ve reached our goal with the team at ToonUps and A Better World.

It took merely a month for us to reach 1,000,000 positive expressions in the game. Each 100,000 expressions helped one child who likely would never have walked without the intervention of CURE. Take a minute to puzzle that through. Simply by playing a game and sharing your positive thoughts and encouragement through it, 10 children will have their lives changed in a dramatic way. Forever.

Here at CURE, we pray asking God to show up in ways only He can take credit for. As I see it, this is one of those ways. It’s not every day that God brings us an organization to partner with. Nor is it every day that an organization will provide a way to help heal children simply by expressing yourself and sharing positive emotions with others! Yet, again God saw fit to provide for CURE, and for that, we are grateful. ToonUps is planning to officially present CURE with their donation in early February. We’re incredibly thankful for the new friends and partners we’ve made at ToonUps and look forward to partnering again in the future!

Keep up to date with the kids being healed through A Better World on the A Better World community page!

Press Release: CURE Partners with ToonUps to heal 10 kids

Lemoyne, Penn., Dec. 13, 2011 – Today, ToonUps and CURE International announced a partnership to bring healing to children through the use of Facebook gaming. ToonUps, maker of the popular social good game, A Better World, recently introduced its first “Reach for the Stars” Community Goal. This feature invites players to do good deeds in the real world and report about them in the game. In doing so, players earn dollars for a charitable cause.

CURE International was chosen as the first beneficiary of the Reach for the Stars feature. The initial venture between the two organizations will result in the healing of 10 children in the developing world who have a curable disability.

“Our new Reach for the Stars activities have been designed to promote a sense of goodwill and camaraderie among players. At least once a quarter, we will offer an opportunity for community members to work together to achieve something positive in the real world through activities in the game,” MarySue Hansell, COO of ToonUps, creator of A Better World, explains. “Our members have told us they love the idea of doing good for others and being a part of an online community that is uplifting and values driven.”

Players of the A Better World will be able to see the faces of the exact children they are helping to heal from within the game.

“We are thrilled to bring the positive emotional involvement that players love about A Better World to the real world to benefit children who have little hope of receiving the medical care they need,” said Joel Worrall, Vice President, cure.org.

Players in the game perform actions called “positive expressions” which can take the form of writing encouraging thoughts or sending uplifting messages to other players. If the community generates one million positive expressions, ToonUps will donate $10,000 to CURE.

Anyone can sign into Facebook and participate. The game is free to play; consumers can visit http://abetterworld.com/cure
to sign up. In addition, players can join the CURE community for A Better World (http://uk.cure.org/abetterworld). There, players will be able to follow along with story of each of these kids before, during and after their surgery using Facebook or email.

Something only He can take credit for…

One of the aspects I most appreciate about CURE is starting our meetings in prayer. It’s something we are very intentional about doing. We always ask God to do something that only He can take credit for doing.

This past weekend we sponsored the Purple Door arts and music festival. This festival is unique in the christian music world, as it brings together mainly hard rock and heavy metal bands. We arrived early Friday morning to set up our new CURE display booth. Read the rest of this entry »

Introducing CURE Correspondents

We just couldn’t wait any longer to tell you about this program! Hopefully you enjoyed the video tour of CURE Kenya from Jenny. Jenny, as you might have guessed, is our first CURE Correspondent! She’s stationed (obviously) in Kenya and is running our CUREkids program in the country.

The CURE Correspondents program is designed to provide a level of access to CURE that you’ve never had before. Through this program, we’ll provide regular videos and photos about the locations, cultures and people we serve as CURE. We hope to expand this program to all of our hospitals and program locations in the coming years.

Please take a moment to share this video with a friend via Facebook, Email or Twitter!

Thank you for your continued support of CURE and our mission.

Something is coming to Kenya

You may have noticed some of the new kids in our CUREkids program are from Kenya. We’re thrilled to have the CUREkids program up and running in Kijabe. However, that is not what the video is describing.

Later this summer we’ll reveal more details about this new initiative that will bring you coverage and content from all over Kenya and eventually the world.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more of the story.

California church partners with CUREkids

First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard, CA, had a special Mother’s Day fundraiser for CUREkids.   “Bountiful Bonnets” raised nearly $2,000 to fund the treatments of two CUREkids.   Ladies wore bonnets to church on Mother’s Day, and men pledged a dollar or more for each bonnet in worship that day.  Read the rest of this entry »

Batter Up: Detroit Tigers and CURE DR

As a lifelong Tigers (and yes, even Lions) fan, this announcement is very exciting for me! Personally, I’ve been a Tigers fan since the days of Alan Trammel. As a kid, I remember collecting all the Detroit Tiger cards I could find, trading any and all cards; I had to get more Tigers. As an adult, in retrospect, this was probably not wise and certainly not lucrative, but that’s the magic of being a kid, none of that matters. All that mattered was collecting the whole team each and every year!

So it is with exceptional personal excitement that I bring to you, in words and in pictures, CURE’s trip to visit, and examine, the Detroit Tigers at their facility in the Dominican Republic! Read the rest of this entry »

World Health Day at CURE

Today is an exceptional day for us here at CURE, its World Health Day! This year, while the World Health Organization is calling attention to antimicrobial resistance, CURE is continuing to call attention to the approximately 80,000,000 children with a curable physical disability.

In support of CURE’s mission, on World Health Day, please consider joining the
1 Child Challenge. By doing this, you’ll be using your most valuable gift, your voice, to help us raise awareness about children who have none. Please consider celebrating World Health Day by honoring a child with a curable disability whom you’ve never met.
