Staff Profile: Dr. Giorgio Lastroni, Medical Director, Beit CURE Hospital

Dr. Giorgio Lastroni, medical director, orthopedic surgeon & aspiring rock star

Dr. Giorgio Lastroni is the only doctor at Beit CURE whom I hadn’t formally met until yesterday.  I had seen him many times, bouncing in and out of his office or quickly making his way to the operating theatre.

He definitely seems to be the most elusive doctor at Beit CURE, but probably one of the most cheerful members of our medical staff.  Dr. Lastroni agreed to meet me yesterday for a short chat at 3 o’clock, unfortunately he was 30 minutes late.  His reason: He was checking on a patient who had just walked in.  Normally I would have been somewhat annoyed, but he was so happy and excited that I could do nothing but forgive him.

Dr. Khalid Noori is an internal medicine specialist who practices at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, N.Y.  Just like fellow Afghan Dr. Akram Babury, he has traveled to his home country several times to volunteer at our facilities in Kabul.  He recently shared some of his thoughts with us about this.

An Afghan-American Doctor’s Passion for His Homeland

Dr. Akram Babury is associate director of pulmonary medicine at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in New York City.  In 2007, he went to  Afghanistan to volunteer at the CURE International Hospital of Kabul.

The trip to Afghanistan was more than just your everyday international volunteer outing for Dr. Babury.  It marked a return to the land of his birth, a country from which had been forced to flee in 1982.

Since his first visit, he’s returned two more times, and his passion for helping the people of his homeland has only grown.

In this video, Dr. Babury talks about his partnership with CURE Kabul and how a late night phone call got it all started.

Dr. Akram (Mohammad) Babury, was also featured by a N.Y. station about his work at CURE Kabul. You can watch it here.
