Something Wonderful: Colors

April2012Camp 013

I just love colors… all the various shades… the different feelings… you can have a very blue day and then a cheery yellow day, and how the color green just makes me feel alive! One of my favorite things as a kid was to get a fresh box of 64 Crayola crayons! Oh the possibilities. I am so thankful for colors. Today was a WONDERFUL coloring day. I love watching the kids choose their colors. Some are quite content to use the same one the entire time and others need a new one for each line and space. Read the rest of this entry »

Something Wonderful: Chicken Dancin’ in Niger

April2012Camp 014I absolutely LOVE it when we have surgical camps. They not only provide important training, but they fill the hospital to the brim. A group of 28 children, with a few adults, arrived last Thursday evening from Zinder.  They are such a polite, fun, and lively bunch. I spent both yesterday and this morning meeting all the new children who have come to have surgery (cleft lip/palate). Some have had their surgeries and were not very happy about it, some were awaiting surgery that particular day, and the rest were still playing and somewhat carefree. Read the rest of this entry »

Something Wonderful: Tuesday Morning with Hameed

I love Tuesday mornings; I start my day with a visit to CURE to do rounds. I visit the patients, pray, and of course blow bubbles. This past Tuesday I was a bit late and so I was still in Leron’s office when I heard the cutest singing coming from the corridor just outside. I opened the door a little and joined my little friend in song. He stopped and then peeked around the corner. What a delight, a sweet little boy about 6 years old with the brightest smile. Something Wonderful: Dusty dry season

Something Wonderful: Football in Niger

bunny&soccer 022On Thursday, Leron scheduled a match for the team that CURE Niger sponsors. They are a group of young men (I thought boys) who needed some equipment. They play and practice in Lazaret, where the hospital is located. Last fall, Coach Jibo came to CURE asking for a donation. Leron gave them some money for jerseys (for which green could not be found, so red it was), balls, and a net. Read the rest of this entry »

Something Wonderful: Savoring Moments

I have been so inspired by Ann Voscamp’s book 1,000 Gifts. I am learning to find joy in the dailies and live with a grateful heart. I have been challenged to slow down and savor time moment by moment. Tuesday was a day full of savoring moments. I would say that Tuesday is my busiest day by far.  Each place I went and each  thing I did, I purposely did not watch the clock and I just dove into that time and place.  Some Tuesday moments: Read the rest of this entry »

Something Wonderful: Favorite Things

One of my favorite things about break from school is hanging out with my kids. I love not having a schedule and just flying by the seat of my pants! So, it was my delight today to be able to hang out with my kids and do another favorite thing: visit the hospital and do rounds with Josh & Hassane! Read the rest of this entry »

Something Wonderful: Change

Delighted to spend a bit of time at CURE this morning. I just love all the little giggles and the way people’s faces light up! Hama has been here about a month. I looked and found a picture of him from just one month ago. He has had his cleft surgery and looks very different.

Something Wonderful: Mothers

mothers and their baby boys... one with casts and the other with a cleft repair

Today, I spent some time with the mothers and grandmothers that are staying at the CURE Hospital Patient Hostel. The hostel is for patients and their families that come from afar and don’t have the means to travel back and forth. It becomes a very neat community. We laughed, prayed, and talked. It was very interesting to hear the stories of how they learned about CURE and traveled from their villages in hopes of creating a better life for their children. Isn’t that what we want as mothers, to see our kids soar higher and farther than we have? Read the rest of this entry »
