Bifine lives in Kenya and has a leg deformity, and in Kenya the sort of specialty medical care Bifine needs is scarce. There are 100 million children in the world just like Bifine who have little hope for the future.

Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Bifine grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Bifine has a curable disability! But you can change Bifine's life forever.

About Bifine

Bifine speaks the language known as nonsense syllables, and although his mother seemed a bit reserved, he talked enough for the both of them. We just smiled and nodded as he went on and on about something that was apparently really important. During our little chat, he moved from his mother’s lap to mine, and then onto the table I was using, laying his hands on everything within reach. And to top things off, he literally tore a page from my book and ate it while simultaneously picking a fight with my water bottle. Incredible.

Despite a few distractions, I did learn that Bifine was born with his severely deformed right leg. When his mother saw him just after giving birth, she said she wasn’t shocked. She was taught to never question, doubt, or argue with God, so she accepted her son just as he was. Her & her husband first went to the hospital when Bifine turned six months old, but when they heard the doctors suggest a below the knee amputation, they never went back to that hospital. Several months after that, Bifine’s mother decided to seek for a second opinion, and that’s when she came to us. But we had to suggest the same thing. I know for any parent, the idea of amputating is heartbreaking, so I understand her hesitation in coming back to us to schedule the surgery. When she told me about the amputation, I realized why she had seemed so reserved. She was still dealing with the choice she had to make on her son’s behalf and the challenge of convincing her husband.

It’s definitely not the easiest of choices, but based on the state of Bifine’s leg, amputation is the best option. The sooner he learns how to use a prosthetic, the better and easier it will be for him. As I watched him wrestling my water bottle, totally unaware of what was going on, I felt his mother’s pain. When they finally prepare to come for the surgery, I pray that she will not look back on her decision. God will give her the strength she needs to stand by her son after the surgery and even as he learns to use his prosthesis, and my hope is that her husband will also be willing to take that stand. In this case, less is more, and I truly believe that God can use Bifine’s “loss” as one of his greatest gains.

  1. Day 160 Bifine's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 07/03/2012 - Was really hoping to see this little guy and see how he is coping, post operation, but clearly that did not happen. Please be praying for him as I try to work out a way of reaching them to organize for a check up hopefully very early in July.

  4. Day 106 Bifine went in for a cast change today, which he wasn't exactly a fan of...but he did find his way to the playroom afterwards, and that definitely got a smile back on his face :) Tomorrow he should get the go ahead to be discharged, so I'll let you know when that happens! http://bit.ly/ySRu9N

  5. Day 103 Bifine with his mom Eucabeth in the patient waiting area before surgery... http://bit.ly/wQHS7O
    Monday March 12, 2012
  6. Day 103 There's not exactly a subtle way to capture an amputation, but I tried. And the procedure he went through is actually called a disarticulation, which means that his knee joint was detached from the lower part of his leg, then sealed off. Anyway, please be praying for his recovery! http://bit.ly/xu4zDR

  10. Day 82 Bifine's treatment date has been changed to 03/12/2012 - Well, we got a call from Bifine's mom today and supposedly the ear infection is no more! So we've gone ahead and scheduled him for admission, and we'd really appreciate your prayers for that ear infection to stay gone :)
    Monday February 20, 2012
  11. Day 77 Bifine's treatment date has been changed to 03/13/2012 - Bifine's dad didn't even bother to bring his son to our clinic today, but called instead, because Bifine still has a bad ear infection. Our doctors strongly advised him to take Bifine to a hospital to have the infection treated, knowing it could get very serious if left unattended. On our end, we're planning to see them at our mobile clinic back in Kisumu to see if he'll be ready to be rescheduled. Prayers for this little guy would be greatly appreciated :)

  12. Day 53 Bifine's treatment date has been changed to 02/15/2012 - This little guy came into the hospital last week but unfortunately he had an ear infection so he could not go through surgery. He was given medicine to deal with the ear infection then discharged. We will see him again in February, hopefully by then he will be okay so that he can go through his surgery. Kindly whisper a prayer for him.
    Sunday January 22, 2012
  13. Day 49 Bifine's treatment date has been changed to 01/16/2012 - Bifine and his mother showed in CURE Kijabe this week and the little guy had his surgery done. I will let you know more about how he is doing soon.

  14. Day 42 No Bifine yet, but it would be fine with me if he shows tomorrow :)

    Thursday January 5, 2012
  16. Day 36 I don't know if Bifine's mother is still battling with the decision to amputate her son's right leg, but as the day draws near, I'm sure she needs our prayers for strength to stand by her son through the procedure, and even for journey mercies as they plan to travel to CURE.
