Kipkurui lives in Kenya and has a foot deformity, and in Kenya the sort of specialty medical care Kipkurui needs is scarce. There are 100 million children in the world just like Kipkurui who have little hope for the future.
Many can't play with their friends or go to school, and when Kipkurui grows up, things that we hope for like marriage or finding a job will be difficult or impossible...all because Kipkurui has a curable disability! But you can change Kipkurui's life forever.
You can help

About Kipkurui

I struggle with the thought that a tight Achilles tendon is considered a disability. The procedure takes a doctor just under thirty minutes and the patient doesn’t even go under anesthesia but just a local anesthetic. The Achilles tendon is the strongest and thickest tendon in the human body, it is found on the posterior part of the foot, and it extends about 15 cm from the back of the heel up the leg. When this tendon tightens it then causes the person to walk on their tiptoes. In most, if not all cases, those who exhibit this symptom are treated as disabled people and unfortunately are shunned and looked down upon as outcasts in their communities. But thankfully, Kipkurui’s mother Bilha and I share the view that "disabled" shouldn't define people like her son who have this condition.

Most parents would send their disabled child to a special school, but not Bilha. She has enrolled her Kipkurui in a normal school. She told me, “He is the only one with any form of disability in his school. I am happy with him, he is very inquisitive, he has a thirst for information and his performance in school is good. I am very proud of him.” I wish words could describe the smile that came over Kipkurui’s face as he heard his mother gush on him for a moment.

Though Kipkurui has not been in any pain, his condition seems to be getting worse as he gets older and goes through some growth spurts. Bilha has never sought after any medical treatment for her son before, but sees the condition getting harder for him and desires the best quality life for Kipkurui. I thank God for Mama Kipkurui and her efforts to give her son a normal life, and I am even more grateful for her decision to get him medical help. I am praying for a full recovery for Kipkurui and am so excited for this little guy to come to CURE, get his surgery, and move on with his life!

  11. Day 35Kipkurui was in and out of the OR before I could even blink! His procedure literally took doctors 15 minutes! What doctors do during an Achilles tendon lengthening is make two small pin size incisions in the back of the heel that simply release the contracted tendon, they then stretch and flex the foot and cast it up! when I went to check on him this morning he was testing out his new crutches for the first time, all I will say is that little man needs some practice! Be praying for him as he continues to recover and heal up!!! http://bit.ly/Mx0yrr
