About Mario
The average statistic for the number of children born with Polydactyly, or extra digits on the hands and feet, is five in every 10,000 according to the BBC. Here at CURE Malawi it seems like the numbers are much higher. I would say close to a third of the kids we see are kids with extra digits, and a lot of them have extra digits on both hands or both feet. There are really no clear causes for it, it just happens, though it an be genetic if both parents have had Polydactyly. It’s more of an annoyance and a vanity issue than anything else. Mario Filipo and his mother, Shika, would agree, as Mario is one of our exponentially blessed children with twelve toes instead of ten.
Though he is only a year old now, Shika is worried that some day her son may be the laughing stock of his peers and no mother wants to see her child be teased and treated badly. She is also concerned about the fact that she cannot find a pair of shoes that properly fits Mario. It’s ok for now that he doesn’t have shoes because he is so young and is carried around on Shika’s back most of the time anyway, but someday it will not be so acceptable. It will be quite a relief for Mario’s mom once his extra toes are taken care of and the best part is he will never be any the wiser that there was ever anything different about him!

JSON RSS- Day 295Spoke with Mario's family and he had a follow up appointment at a local clinic. He has healed fine and hopefully won't have any more problems.
Tuesday September 4, 2012 - Day 233Mario's follow up appointment has been scheduled for 07/17/2012 - Mario has gone back to Ntcheu. He will have his wounds reviewed at a local hospital and any other minor treatment will be handled there. We're so glad he finally made it in for surgery and that he has gone home healthy and happy!

Friday June 29, 2012- Day 228Mario's treatment date has been changed to 06/29/2012 - Mario finally made it in! He came to the hospital and within two days he had surgery and was on his way to recovery. Everything went very smoothly and now he only has ten toes!
Friday June 29, 2012 - Day 113Mario's treatment date has been changed to 03/12/2012 - Mario didn't come in again this week, we're going to have to see if we can call and find out whats going on.
Tuesday March 6, 2012 - Day 105Mario's treatment date has been changed to 03/05/2012 - Mario didn't come this week. Keep him in your prayers that he will come very soon!
Monday February 27, 2012 - Day 92Mario's treatment date has been changed to 02/27/2012 - Mario isn't here this week, but there's a good chance he will be in two weeks! Hope to see him then!
